Very well designed generator
I purchased this generator because I wanted a small generator that would provide both 120 and 240 volts. You have to read the generator descriptions very carefully because they are generally written by someone who has little electrical knowledge or they are written by the company and are sometimes misleading. For instance, this generator would be rated at the surge capacity of 3500 watts by many manufacturers instead of the 3000 watts that Amazon lists. The generator started at the first pull and I purchased an RV plug to connect to the circular twistlock plug that comes with the generator. This plug costs about twenty dollars but is included with the generator. I wanted to be able to get the full output at 120 volts so I put in a call to the phone number painted on the generator and found the people manning the phones didn't know what they were talking about. Amazon saved the day!
I'm going to break this review up into 2 parts, one reviewing the product and one for my Amazon experience related to it. Amazon Experience: I live in Alabama, which was recently hit extremely hard by tornadoes and severe weather. After the tornadoes hit all around where I live, the power infrastructure had major problems. As expected, generators were in extreme demand, none to be found in probably 100-200 miles. The storms hit Wednesday, on Thursday I had the bright idea to hit up Amazon since I had Amazon Prime. I purchased this generator and had it arrive the next day for only $4 shipping. Wen 3500 Watt Generator
I bought this generator at Menards in December '08. We always have power outages and the sump pit fills up quick. I wanted something small to take care of this, so I went into Menards and threw down $299 and took it home. It has been a great generator. 3500 watt surge, 3000 watt cont. It got us through a major storm in May of '09 when we were without power for about 5 days. I couldn't be happier with it. My only regret is not getting the 5500 watt unit. You MUST take care of it. Always use stabil fuel stabilizer in it. Start it once a month and run for about 15 minutes on half load. Always shut it down by turning off fuel supply and let it run out of gas. Use only synthetic oil and change and check REGULARLY. Remember, this is a chinese knockoff of a honda engine and you MUST take care of it or you won't have it as long as you should. 20KW Runs the whole house!
In May I will have had this generator installed for 2 years. I have had ZERO problems with it! Just like it is supposed to it "wakes up" every Monday morning and runs at half speed for about 12 minutes to keep everything limber. Recently, I discovered Amazon had the maintenance kit for only $13.97. It has a new air filter, oil filter and 2 spark plugs. Generac recommends changing the oil at 200 hours or 2 years whichever comes first, so my plan is to change the oil at the 2 year boundary next month. I have had 2 complete power failures here in the country over the last 2 years. One lasted about an hour and a half. Both times the generator started in the required 10 seconds or less and the power transferred automatically. I had to laugh when I saw the power company truck drive by looking for the outage and our lights were the only ones on. Grin!! But I am a retired Electrical Engineer and I KNOW how this stuff works. Held up wonderfully during a 50+ hour outage
I purchased a new construction home four months ago and had two options for a back-up system for the sump pumps in my finished basement: (i) a battery back up with a three hour life, or; (ii) the 20 kW Generac Guardian Series Generator. I went with the generator and it was worth every penny. Three days ago a massive storm rolled through the Chicago area and two tornadoes touched down very close to my home. Electric service to more than 400,000 homes and businesses went out - but the generator kicked on within about 10 seconds of the outage. After 2+ days (about 50 hours after the outage) our power came back on. This generator ran the entire time, powering two refrigerators, two air conditioner units, the entertainment center in my home and a number of lights and outlets. No problems whatsoever: no flickering, no failing, nothing. It did cut down a tad when the air conditioners kicked on but immediately regained full stride. What a machine. Generac 5875 Best investment
Over a year now we bought this and had it wired by local contractor, came with 200 amp transfer panel. Peace of mind when the power goes out, count to 13 and varoom back on.....this has enough power to run the whole house (3500 Sq FT 2 story) 2 fridges. When the power comes back it idles and cools down and shuts off. Normal homes here have 150 amp service, this was designed to handle a normal house without over taxing the generator. Common sense says don't run the microwave or hair dryers but it can handle if it has too. We live in Houston TX and when power goes out gas is hard to find for regular generators, this is plumbed into natural gas line and doesn't require much maintenance. Mobil 1 oil filter 209 fits and has larger capacity. Super easy to change filter and oil, everything is right in the front. This is probably the best investment we have added to our home.

When you need it
I purchased this after Hurricane Irene shook up SW CT. I got a friend who is an electrician so my install cost was only around $2,300. The unit is VERY quiet and sure enough, we got SLAMMED with a brutal October Nor'Easter and the power went out AGAIN. No worries, within a minute the power was back on. The only items this would not power were my Central A/C range and dryer. Since I plan on converting the range and dryer to propane, then really the whole house will be covered. Keep in mind if you have sump pumps/electric hot water or heat, and a well pump, you should go with the 10k unit, this one wont be enough. Since my heat and hot water are propane, and I have city water, it is MORE than enough

The good, the bad, and the ugly!
I purchased one of these about five months ago from a popular online seller for $199.99 with free S&H. If you already own, or you are considering buying this gen set, you should read this. If you have experienced some of the same problems, maybe this info will be helpful. I am a retired Plant Engineer from a major world class manufacturer in the US and have 40+ years of experience with machinery and equipment so I know a lot about equipment manufacturing and repair. I really like the concept and idea of this gen set because its small, light, and it really does run about 9 hours (50% load) on a tank (1.3 gal.) of fuel but it does have its problems. I can sum up the problems I've had in two words, Quality Control! I can't speak for all the units out there, only mine. 2000 watt generator review
Having bought 3 generators I must remark that the original model was modified to include additional features and a slightly more powerful engine. The Only problem I had with the 1st model was that it would shut off at times (on 2 different units) when there was no load. This did not occur in the improved model and in addition the newer model is equipped with a low oil level shut off sensor,2 oil ports,a built in fuel gauge and a better frame/vibration mount design. Also the improved model has different style controls and power sockets. The only problem I observed with the improved model is that the battery charging cable gauge is cheaper in quality and gauge. The new improved model seems to run slightly more quietly. All in All I am pleased with the performance although the peak wattage is less than desirable for heavy starup applications.. BOB

Don't buy this generator
I purchased this generator and was very disappointed. The housing surrounding the pull cord is made of extremely cheap plastic that will break after a few pulls, and cause the cord to tangle. It is nothing but a headache. The motor mount where the engine attaches to the cage is also made of low quality steel that will also break on you. In general it is crap. Pay a little bit more and buy one that will not provide frustration.
