Buggy but not its fault
The wind generator actually works well. The instructions are a bit fuzzy, for example, "the straight edge of the blade should be to the right when fixed to the hub." Sure it sounds simple enough, but what if you are on the left of the hub? The blades are not straight, they are contoured, so what the hell? I just put it together like I designed it and it has worked fine. I'm guess just a common sense approach to the assembly works best. The charge controller also clicks. I had to contact customer service to confirm this, but a note in the instructions would have been nice to quell my fears of burning the house down when my wife called me to say the controller was clicking. All in all it is a good product. The last tip is to be sure you're able to mount the turbine high enough to make it worth your while. If you can get it 40 plus feet you should be fine.

Great for the right site - made in USA - about the output...
First of all, this wind generator's output is preset to 14.1 volts (for charging batteries, you know. The preset can be adjusted from 13 to 17 volts, by the way). 14.1 volts divided into 400 watts is 28 amps, so the specs are correct as stated in the product description. Remember to always keep in mind the differences between 120 volt AC current and 12 to 14 volt DC current -- it's really important on this alternative energy stuff. Naturally, you are only going to get close to the 400-watt maximum output with a steady 28 mph wind. But the unit won't "go up in smoke" at that point as some reviewer said -- all wind turbines have built in cut-out system that prevent them from going over their rated output and being damanged. C'mon, folks... the people who make these things are not dummies. But it's true that there are not many places in the world where you get 28 mph winds blowing on a regular, continuous basis. The suggestion of other reviewers to figure on...
Great Product Better Than I Expected
I have this wind generator hooked up to 8 6 volt deep cycle batteries powering my 2 bedroom off grid home. we run 2 televisions dvd players and compact flourescent lights for bedrooms and kitchen without having to turn on our generator. We dont have a microwave, and our refrigerator runs on propane. But after using our loud generator for 2 months at $15.00 for gas on a daily basis, The machine will pay for itself quickly, The noise is minimal. The sounds it makes reminds me of birds chirping. You could not use it to run vacum cleaners washer dryers and things like that but if you need a little energy for lighting and small appliances this wind generator is great.
These things are JUNK
6 years ago, I bought my first Air-X ( that's the model with the Southwest Windpower brand on it, this is their product) which ran for 2 years, then had a minor failure, fixed under warranty. It then lasted about a year, and the circuit board failed yet again. Again, it was warranted. The next failure, however, was not. So, I bought a kit from SWWP to "update" the turbine to the new "Air Breeze". That lasted 2 months, and it utterly melted down inside. It was a toxic swamp of caustic material from the insulation and other materials inside, which had gotten hot. That was fixed under warranty and lasted ... a month. Then, I bought one of these. It was installed temporarily for about 4 months, and then moved to replace the dead Air Breeze (failed yet again, 3rd time). It lasted a month, and it too, melted down inside. Yes, the same location, the same load, the same everything the original one made 3 years without major issue, has now been through 4 rebuilds in...

Just arrived today-- what they didn't tell you....
I purchased the 1200 watt 5 blade wind turbine Windmax and it arrived today so I have not yet installed but will report on that when I do. The package did not come with a packing slip. The plastic envelope on the outside of the box where the slip is often located was empty and it was not inside the box. It was packed well, but the screws were out of the plastic package and were lose within a compartment. The equipment appeared to come from China because of the English and Chinese symbols on the turbine housing. Visually, the equipment looked good with a nice white painted finish. The wind tail rudder was larger than the picture showed and it appeared very effective. I noticed the unit was heavier than I expected, and it had a rugged quality about it. There were no installation instructions per say, but they did include a "Wind Turbine Guidebook," which covered five of the HYenerty models. Their Turbine Guidebook was photo copied or they ran it off on a printer that...
Great Little Turbine!!!
We got the turbine up and running in just a few hours! It fit easily onto a standard 2" steel pipe. It only weighed about 50 pounds so it wasn't too difficult to mount. It came with a charge controller included which was nice. The controller has it's own dump load and has 3 led lights indicating what it's doing. Later we will add solar panels to the unit. Once the wind picked up the turbine started spinning wonderfully. The output was better than expected and quickly charged 8 12-volt deep cycle batteries. We had the batteries running into an outback off-grid inverter which handled the output of the turbine quite easily. So far I am very pleased with this purchase!

Best one out there!
I bought this turbine a year ago and it has been working perfectly. I checked several sites and found this to be the best priced. I am planing to get another one in about 3 months. Highly recommended.

Got Wind?
I bought this the other day after seeing in at the Marin Headlands Visitor Center at Rodeo Beach near SF. The kit is relatively easy to build. The motor case cracked a tiny bit when we inserted the motor into the housing. It looks cool. The biggest problem is that you need a good bit of wind to make the thing spin. We found you could flick the propeller to start it, but it needed a stiff breeze to keep it going. Also, you need to put some ballast in your soda can or it will fall over. We filled ours with water and froze it for a more solid base. Cute toy, but we probably won't buy another. Next, we'll try mounting it on a long pole to get more elevation, and hopefully more wind.

Don't Follow the Directions
The directions tell you to add water to a bottle for stability, but it doesn't work very well if it is truly windy outside. And, you need a lot of wind to get the thing going. Our bottle tipped over almost immediately and got the LED light wet-apparently ruining it--so we never got to see the windmill light it up. Filling the bottle with sand or dirt would have been a better suggestion. By following the directions I wasted 13 dollars!
Great learning toy
I bought this kit as a demonstration for our science unit on renewable/nonrenewable energy. I put it together at school in about twenty minutes, including having to take the unit apart because I put it together wrong. (Totally my fault.) The kit was made of high quality materials. The instructions were adequate. When the kit was put together, it could be demonstrated for the class merely by spinning by hand, or by using a fan. It worked outside during the onset of a rainstorm. I did not set it down as the base (empty soda bottle) is too light to withstand the wind. I would suggest filling the base with sand for stability if you wanted to set it down. I would buy other kits from this company.

Solar energy cannot economically compete in electricity generation
01.01.70
. The costs are in cents per kilowatt hour. The blue part represents capital and transmission costs; the red part represents fuel, operation, and maintenance costs.
As you can plainly see, solar energy is much more expensive and would not be considered for utility-scale electricity generation were it not for government mandates and subsidies. Another problem with solar generation is that it requires backup power because even in Arizona, the sun doesn’t shine all the time. Solar plants typically produce just a fraction of their rated capacity. For instance, TEP operates one of the largest solar PV arrays in the United States, a 5-MW system. But over two years of operation, the capacity factor for that generator has averaged 19%, meaning it produced only 19% of its rated capacity most of the time.
One of the rationales for using solar (and wind) energy is that it is supposed to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions, but that isn’t necessarily so if the backup generation comes from fossil-fuel powered plants. A study in the Netherlands shows that the intermittent generation by wind actually increases carbon dioxide emissions because the fossil fuel-run backup generators have to cycle up and down constantly rather than being run efficiently at a constant output. That cycling uses more fuel. (Note, the study was specific to wind power, but it could be applied to intermittent solar power also due to variable generation on cloudy days.)
These programs brought America back into a leadership position on clean energy, and resulted in this country connecting more wind turbines to the grid than
Having a direct drive generator and eliminating a gear box, would represent a simpler, more cost-effective way to make utility scale wind turbines, he said.
When compared to a standard 100 meter wind turbine, which houses the generator 60 meters above the sea, the Vertiwind's design has a much lower center of
