All-Power America APG3014 Test Results
The All-Power America APG3014 generator with 3 Hp, JF156 engine performs OK for the price but the output power is less than advertised. Using accurate meters, an oscilloscope, and some resistive loads, I measured several output factors: 1.) voltage was 122.5 Volts. 2). reliable current was only 10 Amps (1225 watts) -- 11 Amps (1348 watts) caused the engine to slow way down and 12 Amps (1470 watts) caused the engine to stop. 3.) waveform was sinusoidal without anything plugged in but turned somewhat triangular under load. 4.) frequency was 60 Hz except while the engine throttle was adjusting to different appliance loads. When looking at the manufacturer (Jiangsu Jiangdong Group) specifications web page for their JD 1500 unit, I noticed that they rate their JF156 engine, 60 Hz unit at only 1.3 kVA (1300 watts -- not 1400 watts as advertised for the All-Power America version and with a peak output of...

Good little machine
I bought this generator for power outages and it works well for light use. I really like the light weight. It can be moved around easily. It's good on gas too. I like the charging cables that come with it for charging batteries, they plug right in the front panel. It also has a fuel guage built into the fuel tank. I found the drain on the carb very convenient for storage. The air filter has easy access wing nuts for easy cleaning. The rubber feet on the bottom keep it from "walking" across the floor when running. The only thing I didn't care for was the light on the front panel that indicates there is 120 volt power present, it is very dim, making it hard to see in the daylight, but I can live with that. I bought a second one just to have two around. If you're looking for a small generator, this is a winner!

Good choice for a small generator
If you're looking for one of the smallest/cheapest generators that can still run nearly any 120V item, this is a good choice. It's got enough power to handle starting a motor like your fridge in a power outage (which is something most would want) and one like this is the minimum size I'd trust for that job having at least ~1500 watts (but beware that their "2000 watt" main label is the surge rating and not the "continuous" number which a lot of ads do). This isn't into the $300+ category or ones that are so big you need wheels on them to save your back while moving it (but it is over 50lbs as you should expect with such equipment). With it having a 4 stroke engine you don't need deal with mixing gas/oil like some other small units need. I actually ordered this thru northern tools and when it was shipped (probably from OEM) it was double boxed to help minimize chances of damage. I've had no problems with it, but have been careful with what I run knowing it doesn't have that...

Great generator for the money
I ordered this item recently through Amazon and am very pleased. I was leaning towards a more costly generator but finally settled on this model. The instructions for start up where easily understood and I had the unit operational in a matter of minutes. The unit runs quiet compared to other constant speed generators. I plugged my RV into the 30 amp outlet for rv applications and was able to use the AC and other electrical appliances with no problems at all. I am very happy I went this direction and not the more expensive choices.

3,000 Watt @4500 ft
Purchased this item Generator Model #46515 from Cabela's in Utah. Also purchased wheel kit for unit at same time. Brought unit home, turned over, cut off bottom of box. Now I have a cover for the unit (when it is not running and cool). 1st time startup: Followed instructions accompanying unit = did not start. 2nd time startup: After pulling start up cord 2 times, moved choke lever to 'run' position = started right up. So now I know how to start my unit: 2 pulls @ choke position ON then, 1 pull with choke OFF. Next, I applied electrical load to test capacity. Unit bogged down (sounded like it was shutting down) when I added electrical load OVER 3,250 watts total. Saw on a comment board for another generator that someone else experienced power load loss at 6500' above sea level. This is probably the case here in SLC, UT (we are at 4500' above sea level). Other than that, the unit runs with out problems (have run it about 5...

You get what you pay for
Pros: *Cheap *Puts out Square, Triangle, and Sine waves *Ok bandwidth (I tested -3dB at about 210KHz) *Quick assemblyCons: *Pads and traces on the board are much too large, soaking up a lot of heat when trying to solder components. I would not recommend if you don't have much surface mount experience as you might find it a bit tricky to get solder to flow well when attaching the IC.*Can't handle much of a load. (dropped to -3dB at 6mW)*You can see quite a bit of the edges of the square wave in sine wave, especially at higher frequencies.*Sine wave has a very large DC bias. The sine wave centers around 6VDC. (This is the worst part to me)*Lower frequencies have a significant amount of distortion at the higher side of the fine adjust.*No battery clip to hold the battery, it is just sandwiched between a couple pieces of weather striping. All in all it is maybe an ok project...

Cheapo fx generator
The generator arrived intact, and with good instructions. I was able to assemble the machine in about 2.5 hours. I am slow, but steady. The tiny surface mount caps and resistors were hard for me to handle. I cannot image anyone over the age of forty being able to solder those little fella's without a magnified light. The generator worked well on the first try, and the output waves - square, triangle, and sine are easy to trace on a scope. Amplitude was about 3 volts max. There is a coarse and fine frequency adjustment. I am going to use this as a field tool, so I did not need anything fancy. So far so good!

Good performance, excellent value
We live in Southern Louisiana, smack-dab in the middle of hurricane alley, and decided to purchase a backup generator to deal with power outages in the event of an emergency. I wanted sufficient power capacity to run our refrigerator, a small portable AC, a few lights, a small TV, charge our cell-phones, and occasionally charge laptop batteries. We figured that around 3000 continuous watts and 4000 surge watts would be sufficient for our needs. There are several generators sold by the hardware chains (Lowe's, Home Depot) that fit this description, but they're priced around $600 - $700. After some research on the internet, we decided that the PowerMax XP4400 would match our needs, and suit our budget...

XP4400E generator
Overall, I'm very pleased with this generator. It is definitely a good value for the money. The FedEx guy delivered it in good condition. The packaging was excellent. I pulled it out of the box, installed the wheel kit (5-10 minutes), filled it with fuel and oil and it started right up. It is fairly quiet for a generator, but keep in mind quiet is a relative thing. I would say it is definitely quieter than a lawn mower or a typical Briggs&Stratton generator with a lawnmower type muffler (this generator has an automotive type muffler which helps keep the noise down). It seems to be pretty well built and I expect it to hold up just fine. I bought it as an emergency backup generator and I feel it really is perfect for that use. I think if you are looking for a generator that will get a ton of regular use, you would probably be better off to spend the extra money and get a Honda. But for something that will only see occasional use, this genny really fits the ticket...

Power Max XP4400E & XP4400 Generator
By Ernie, Retired Journeyman Lineman. The XP4400E is well worth the extra cost over the XP4400, as starter rope must be pulled out at an angle. This is an excellent generator for the money. The voltage regulation is excellent. Amazing output for it's size along with being very quite for the output that it has. The discription Amazon has for it is great, so many items are not discribed well enough. There is a couple points I want to share with present owners and would be owners. (1) The voltage selector switch not only changes the voltage monitor 120 to 240 but it's main function is tap changing, this being the reason it must not be switched unless breaker is off (open) or generator shut down. It parallels the two power windings when set for 120 to the 120 sockets and the 120-240 socket. You can draw full capacity fron the 120 sockets or at the 120-240 socket from terminals Bu & R, the W terminal has no voltage so 240 is not available now. (Refer to owners manual...

Fascinating gadget
I absolutely love this thing. Having recently moved out on my own, and generally just enjoying statistics in general, I bought this to monitor my electric costs after two high electric bills in a row. The various results I found were quite surprising. My air purifier, which I bought here on Amazon, uses 85 watts all the time... 85 * 24 hrs * 30 days / 1000 watts = 61.2kWhr * $0.20 = $12.24 a month. Well, that's quite a costly monthly addition I never thought of. And that's just the begining. My Vornado fan uses 45w... my air conditioner, on high 6 (out of 12) spikes up to 1200 watts. Jeez. My computer, at idle with external drives, uses about 250w. When doing extremely intensive things, like encoding a video, 310w. My light behind my computer desk, with five, 10-watt bulbs, doesn't actually use 50-watts total. No, it uses 50-watts for the bulbs, PLUS 30-watts apparently just for the light unit to function...

Excellent Product!
Two years ago, my electricity consumption jumped about 40% and I ignored the problem until this fall's rate increases. I wanted to find out what I bought back in 2003 that's still eating power today. Enter the P4400 Kill-A-Watt unit, which is the only low-cost product of its type on the market today. I tried but failed to find its specifications online. So I bought a couple of these things to try them out. Here are the details on what it can do. * How big is the display: 4 digits. * What are the front-panel button capabilities: volts, amps, watts, volt-amps, power-factor, frequency (hz), KWH, timer (since reset). * Does it lose its data in a power failure: yes. * You have to plug the unit into a nonswitched wall outlet, it can't measure overhead lighting or large appliances. * It will report the amount of time (hours:min up to 99:59, then hours for about a year) since last reset but won't tell you how much of that time the attached device...

Australian state government to privatise electricity generators

01.01.70

10 December 2011

Defying widespread public opposition to the privatisation of the electricity industry, the Liberal-National Party government of New South Wales (NSW) announced last month the sale of the state’s power generators. Premier Barry O’Farrell said he would introduce legislation enabling the sale as soon as state parliament resumed next year.

O’Farrell is confident he can proceed backed by the federal Labor government of Julia Gillard, which is on record as supporting the privatisation of electricity in NSW, and aware that the power industry unions are working to stifle opposition by their members.

The plan is to sell outright the generator companies, Eraring, Delta West, Delta Coastal and Macquarie Generation, along with electricity development sites. The newly-established state-owned Cobbora coal mine near Dunadoo in the state’s mid-west will either be sold or leased. The government hopes to raise a total of $5 billion.

The government will retain, for now, the state-owned electricity transmission network (poles and wires), estimated to be worth as much as $30 billion. O’Farrell said the exclusion of the poles and wires fulfilled a promise he made before last March’s election, in which the previous Labor government was swept from office in a landslide defeat. O’Farrell’s decision, however, is purely tactical, and can be reversed at any time.
